Cupric chloride is used in gold refining as part of a process called the Miller process. In this process, gold is dissolved in aqua regia (a mixture of hydrochloric acid and nitric acid) to form a gold chloride solution. Cupric chloride is then added to this solution to react with any silver present, forming silver chloride. The silver chloride is then filtered out, leaving behind the pure gold chloride solution. This solution is then treated with a reducing agent, such as sulfur dioxide, to precipitate the gold out of solution as a fine powder. The powder is then melted and cast into bars or other forms for further processing. Overall, cupric chloride is used in gold refining to help separate gold from other metals, such as silver, and to purify the gold for further use or sale.
